Abstract

The digital revolution of cultural displays has changed the way we preserve and present culture from static visual presentation to immersive and experience cultural engagement. Most studies of immersive cultural exhibitions, however, are technology centric and do not provide a holistic experiential framework that fully integrates multimodal interaction, emotional engagement, and cultural immersion. The purpose of this study is to establish a Multisensory Immersive Exhibition Framework for preserving local culture in Indonesia by merging sensory stimulation, emotional engagement, cultural narrative, and immersive spatial experience. The study adopted an Iterative Design-Based Framework Research (DBFR) approach using a qualitative-dominant mixed-method design, which included systematic literature mapping, emotional-sensory culture exploration, immersive prototype construction, user immersion evaluation, and expert validation. The findings suggest that the impact of multisensory interaction is considerable on emotional engagement, sensory immersion and cultural presence in immersive exhibition settings. The iterative refinement process also showed that the combination of tactile contact, immersive audio, synchronized visual projection, and experiential storytelling led to greater emotional-cultural attachment and meaningful visitor experience. The framework consists of four interconnected dimensions: sensory stimulation, emotional engagement, immersive spatial experience, and cultural narrative, which together contribute to experiencing cultural preservation. This current research contributes to the theories of immersive cultural exhibition and multisensory interaction by proposing an integrated experiential framework based on the setting of Indonesian local culture. Practically, the framework gives strategic guidance to exhibition designers, museums, and cultural institutions on how to build more human-centered, emotionally engaging, and experiencing cultural exhibition environments.
